Watch: Floodplains Are a Natural Climate Solution

With climate change, many of Washington's watersheds are changing from snow-dominant to rain-dominant systems, bringing more water into our river. Healthy floodplains are a key natural solution: They absorb heavy flows, reduce flooding and temper storm surges.

Our new video discusses the importance of floodplain restoration in Washington, including a collaborative project at Morse Creek on the Olympic Peninsula, where the North Olympic Salmon Coalition and the Jamestown Sโ€™klallam Tribe partnered to protect local neighborhoods from flooding while improving habitat for salmon. This effort complements work The Nature Conservancy and others are doing to restore floodplains throughout Western Washington, improving the health of our natural environment, its wildlife and neighboring communities.
