Herman Flamenco is joining our Forest team as the Conservation Forester for the Central Cascades.
He shared his background and passion for conservation with us in this short biography:
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. Growing up in a city, I did not have much access to what is typically considered a forest. However, my parents took my sisters and I on a trip to Yosemite National Park one year and being around the giant sequoias inspired me to do my part to preserve such beautiful areas. I went on to study forestry at Oregon State University and graduated with an honors B.S in Forest Management and a masters in Sustainable Forest Management.
I began my career assisting in the management of a family-owned timber company in southwestern Oregon. While I enjoyed the work, it was not fulfilling because I am interested in promoting conservation and the sustainable management of our natural resources for future generations to enjoy. In my search for how to best accomplish that, I discovered the Nature Conservancy and made it my mission to be a part of this organization.
I am thrilled to be joining the Central Cascades team and look forward to contributing to the Nature Conservancy’s mission. On my off time, I like to woodwork and paint. I enjoy hiking with my wife Bridgette and our dog Remus, as much as I enjoy our lazy days in.
Herman will have a busy field season ahead of him with more than 500 acres of logging, fuels reduction work, and reforestation that will be occurring on the Central Cascades Forest beginning in April, 2021. We are looking forward to Herman’s expertise in advancing the pace and scale of forest restoration in Central Washington.
