Forests and Fire in the Yakama Nation

In the Yakama Nation, climate change is disrupting traditions, natural resources—and community health. Tribal members are on the frontlines of consequences wrought by our warming planet: from seasonal shifts to spikes in asthma to growing wildfire risk.

Funding and resources have been on a downward slide,” said Yakama Nation forester Ryan Sanchey. “With fewer resources, that makes it more difficult to suppress fires.”

Through strategic forest management and outreach to vulnerable communities, Yakama Nation leaders are rising to the challenge of climate change. It is an uphill battle, but an essential one.
