Meet the Farmer: Brenda Fincher

The smile on Brenda’s face is evidence of how excited she is about her plot. Brenda is not new to gardening ‚ but before now, these garden projects haven’t lasted. Now, Brenda is starting with a slightly smaller plot and working to grow fruits and vegetables to eat. As she says, “I love planting and harvesting — just not the weeding.”

For her, the benefits are plenty. “It is nice knowing what is in the garden,” says Brenda, and it is cheaper than buying organic from the store. Brenda is also looking forward to connecting with other farmers and learning about gardening from other farmers.

This plot will be reflective of what Brenda’s mom attempted to teach her — though, as she puts it, the gardening was wasted on the young. “I wish I had listened to my mom,” says Brenda. But one thing stuck: the importance of planting more than one row of corn. So Brenda will be planting corn in honor of her.
